About 24. The end of the European Empires

After WWII, European colonial empires rapidly dissolved as nationalist movements demanded independence and metropole powers lacked resources and will to maintain control. Decolonization occurred through negotiated transitions, violent conflicts, or sudden withdrawals, reshaping global politics and creating dozens of new sovereign states in Asia and Africa.

The process was often messy and incomplete, leaving legacies of arbitrary borders, ethnic tensions, economic dependency, and neocolonial influence. While ending formal empire was a moral and historical necessity, the transition frequently failed to deliver stable governance or equitable development, contributing to ongoing conflicts and underdevelopment in many postcolonial states.
