About 3. Physical Layer Introduction

The physical layer is the bottom-most layer responsible for transmitting raw bit streams over a physical medium, dealing with the mechanical, electrical, and functional characteristics of the interface. It defines critical specifications like voltage levels, timing of signals, connector pinouts, cable types, and transmission modes (simplex, half-duplex, or full-duplex), essentially translating logical digital bits into physical signals that can travel across wires, fiber optics, or air.

This layer also manages line configuration and network topologies, determining how devices are physically linked together in mesh, star, bus, ring, or hybrid arrangements. While it does not understand the meaning of the data being sent, its performance directly dictates the maximum data rate and reliability of the entire network, making proper cabling standards and signal integrity fundamental to successful data communication.
