VLAN tagging (802.1Q) preserves membership across trunk links, enabling flexible reconfiguration without rewiring, while inter-VLAN routing and private VLANs enforce isolation policies, combining the simplicity of flat switching with the security and broadcast containment benefits of traditional subnetting in modern campus and data center designs.
